There’s an unspoken rule in winemaking: the better the view from the vineyard, the better the wine will be. Okay, so it might be a bit of romanticized wine-related nonsense, but there are more than enough examples to make it fit. Take Scion [https://www.scionvineyard.com/], a winery

There’s an unspoken rule in winemaking: the better the view from the vineyard, the better the wine will be. Okay, so it might be a bit of romanticized wine-related nonsense, but there are more than enough examples to make it fit. Take Scion, a winery situated above the township of Rutherglen. The winemakers claim they planted their vines in this spot to take advantage of the views of the Australian countryside, and it isn’t difficult to see why - it’s a quintessential Aussie wine country landscape, and one in which we would happily spend some time watching the sunset, a glass of vino in our hands.

Established in 2002 by designer and all-around creative Rowly Milhinch, Scion was an attempt at first to get back in touch with the young man’s roots. Rowly was the great-great-great-grandson of the founder of Morris Wines, one of Australia’s most renowned viticulturalists back in the mid 19th century. Scion’s approach developed as a product of that link to the past; this was to be a modern winery with a strong sense of its heritage, a business which blended the simplicity and rawness of the old ways, with the savoir-faire and technology of the 21st century. Juxtaposition produces powerful results, and the innovative and experimental approach that Rowly employs as a creative winemaker shine through in every bottle. As a result, it’s not only the views that are stunning… what’s in the bottles is just as spectacular.
